Our protective products for horse noses are used for things like headshaking, sunburn on the horse's nose, general sensitivity to insects, and for horses with allergies. These simple aids can often bring about significant improvements in various problems, as confirmed by numerous horse owners and veterinarians who already use our nose nets for horses.
Depending on the application, nostril nets for horses must meet different requirements. Therefore, there are special versions for riding and pasture, which must also fit very well. Fastening with hook-and-loop fasteners and connectors offers advantages over zippers or permanently attached parts, which we explain in more detail below.
NOSE SHADE (Sunburn/Pollen Allergy/Headshaking/UV Protection/Fly Protection)
For use in the pasture, we recommend the "Nose Shade" horse nose net, which offers 77% UV protection. It protects sun-sensitive horses from sunburn and can provide relief for allergy sufferers and headshakers. The net is more tightly woven than the "Nose Cover" and, thanks to its leather reinforcement, is particularly robust, as it is constantly in motion while grazing. Pollen, dust, and dirt collect on the outside, so daily cleaning with water and a brush is recommended to maintain air permeability. The "Nose Shade" reduces the amount of allergy-causing particles entering the respiratory tract thanks to its tighter weave. This can often be helpful for horses with pollen allergies. If sunburn or fly protection are more important, the narrower and shorter "Nose Screen" UV nose net is usually used.
NOSE COVER (Headshaking/Insect Protection/UV Protection)
Experience has shown that the Nose Cover can significantly relieve headshaking symptoms while riding. It is available in various shapes to fit different bridles. For optimal effectiveness, a good fit is crucial: The mesh should fit snugly and not hang loosely around the nostrils. The correct size is best measured directly on the horse; the dimensions can be found in the product descriptions. The Nose Cover also protects against insects and offers 59% UV protection.
NOSE STRINGS (Headshaking/Fly Protection)
Some headshaking horses respond even better to cords that flick against their nostrils when moving, thus triggering a sensory stimulus. The nose strings are attached to the sides of the bridle's cheek pieces and can be individually adjusted using sliding metal eyelets. Since horses' reactions vary, it may be necessary to try different versions. You can find out more about this in our blog post "Headshaking in Horses." The nose strings can also be helpful for horses with high sensitivity to insects in the nose area.
NOSE SCREEN (Sunburn/UV Protection/Fly Protection)
If sunburn protection is your priority, the nose screen is the right choice. It offers UV protection in the nostril area while also protecting against insects. The shorter design is ideal for preventing sunburn in the markings. Existing sunburn in horses usually heals quickly under this cover, which offers 77% UV protection. When used preventively, it can usually prevent sunburn altogether. You can find more information on this in our blog post "Sunburn in Horses - Sustainable Protection and Prevention."
CONNECTOR (Attaching the innoHorse nose net to the sun protection mask)
The "connector" is a special connector that is only necessary if the nose net is to be attached directly to an innoHorse sun protection mask. This is particularly useful if the horse is to be taken out to pasture without a halter. In this case, the sun protection mask must be equipped with an additional Velcro strap to attach the connector. When ordering the innoHorse "easy shade 59%" and "sun block 77%" sun protection masks, you have the option to select this. Please note that this only works with nostril nets that have Velcro fasteners at the top edge. Alternatively, the nostril nets can simply be attached to the bridle or stable halter without the connector.
Why don't we sew the nostril nets directly onto the innoHorse UV protection masks or use zippers?
Why don't we sew the nostril nets directly onto the innoHorse UV protection masks or use zippers? For reasons of flexibility, optimal fit, and durability, we do not offer permanently sewn nose covers, nose shades, or nose screens (i.e., fly or UV masks with integrated nose protection). Instead, we recommend our practical kit solution, the advantages of which you can read here: Blog article "Light protection masks with sewn-on nostril protection - and why we don't offer them that way."
