Sweet itch is caused by the mosquito species collicuides spec. Their saliva penetrates the horse's skin when it pricks and can trigger the symptoms of sweet itch. Certain proteins in the saliva of female mosquitoes act as a triggering allergen. If it is possible to consistently keep the mosquitoes away from the affected horses, the outbreak of sweet itch can be prevented or at least lessened in severity.
